Millions Of Healthy Gay Men Can Save Lives Through Organ & Tissue Donation.
There are millions of healthy gay men who should now be able to be considered for organ & tissue donation. The transplant community, however, has failed to evolve with modern technological advancements and still refuses gay men this privilege. Follow G.A.V.E. as we raise awareness for the need to do away with this now pointless restriction and allow gay men the right to save lives through healthy donations.
Why Gay Men Are Banned?:
In the early 1990's, government health agencies banned gay men from donating blood, organs and other tissue due to the expanding AIDS crisis. At the time, testing for the HIV virus was inadequate and resulted in the transmission of HIV to unsuspecting recipients.
Since then, testing has advanced to a point where disease transmission can be easily avoided. Where it previously took up to 6 months to detect an infection in the early 90's, it can now be detected within days with appropriate testing.
What Is The Future For Donations From Gay Men?:
Besides G.A.V.E.'s intention to affectively change the transplant communities stance on this needless ban, there is currently consideration for allowing HIV patients to donate to those already infected with the virus.
